Vanha Kauppala Open doors 2024

The attractions are open on Saturday 10th of August from 10 am to 5 pm (unless stated otherwise).

#1:

"Port Arthur"

Known as Port Arthur, the house was built in 1928 and
extended twice. The sloping courtyard, divided into three parts, offers plenty to admire, especially for the little ones in the family. Also yard sale and Puu-Nurmes postcards on sale at the pop-up shop.

Here you will find the tastiest doughnuts in Puu-Nurmes, as well as coffee, tea and snacks. At the yard sale you can make bargains from a selection of tools, crafts and tableware.

Built in 1909, the house has been home to different businesses, from a guest house to a radio shop. Nowadays it is a private residence and you can visit the downstairs apartment. The original style of the early 20th century is not much in evidence due to renovations in the 1970s, but the house is nevertheless atmospheric with a personal interior full of stunning details. The garden overlooks one of Puu-Nurmes’ most spectacular views of Lake Pielinen. Also for sale Riikka Muikku’s art and Nurmes-postcards.

A cosy and delightfully decorated house on a steep slope of Työväenkatu. It is said that this house, completed in 1899, was built from the logs of the Luostanlinna work prison in Rautavaara. The current resident has lived in the house since the 1970s.

The oldest house in the Vanha Kauppala (old market town), where the VoimaVilla shop is open. There is also a pop-up café and a yard sale at the garden building.

Come and visit Little Grandma’s Chambers, a country cellar excavated last summer, the outdoor sauna and the huge garden. The garden also has grilled sausages for sale.

The history of this house includes both the church and the clocks. Under its current owner it has been for almost 30 years. There is also a yard sale.

One of our new sites is like a candy cane on the outside, but what a sight you’ll see behind the gates. This house was renovated 20 years ago with respect for the old. There is also a juice bar and in the yard sale old dishes for sale.

The thoroughly renovated 1950s house has been designed to combine modern comfort with the cosy spirit of the reconstruction era. The past and present of the house are linked by the name Hilda Emilia. There is also a waffle café on site.

Originally built as a school house and a rental house, the building’s crowning glory has been the stargazing tower on the roof. During the war, the house was almost destroyed when an unexploded firebomb was found in the attic logs. This property is looking for a new owner.

The Näre Association of the Unemployed opens the doors of its Närekartano office. You can get to know the activities of the house and the association and the garden, make bargains at the yard sale and enjoy the products of the association’s café.

"Kukko ja kaksi kanaa" (The Rooster and a couple of hens)

One of the most anticipated pop-up restaurants at the
event, Kukko ja pari kanaa (The Rooster and a couple of hens) reopens its doors again. From 11 am onwards they are serving French inspired three course meal. There is also art exhibition with art for sale.

"Watchmaker Virtanen's house"

The home is known as watchmaker Virtanen’s House, according to it’s builder. It has been with its current owner for more than 20 years and has undergone a complete renovation, with original surfaces excavated. The interior combines modernity with log walls. There is also pop-up bistro & café and handicrafts for sale.

This 1940’s log house, suitable for a larger family, is looking for a new owner. But even if you’re not looking to buy, this property’s traditional-style interior and large yard are worth a visit. Get to know Porokylä Bakery and POP Bank Nurmes at the yard of Lääkärikeskus. The bakery will sell their delicious bakery products and have a pop-up café. You can take part in spinning the wheel of fortune and learn more about the bank’s operations.

One of the oldest and most beautiful buildings in the Vanha Kauppala (old market town) is now opening its doors for the first time in the event. It is also looking for a new owner, but just visiting this building with its rich history will be an experience for many participants.

The pop-up gallery of three artists, Katja Kuittinen, Suvi Komsa and Tuuli Meriläinen, opens its doors from 10 am to 4 pm. Nakki vieköön! -hot dogs will be on sale, famous illustrator Matti Pikkujämsä will paint portraits and the Medusa band will perform rock and pop classics.

Founded in 2021, the Nurmes Billiards and Snooker Club invites you to discover the secrets of billiards and snooker. The entrance to the premises is through the backyard of Kauppatori 3.

Welcome to a site as old as the Nurmes railway, the old railwaymen’s barracks. The completely renovated building is now home to four families. Apartments 1 and 4 are open. There is also a pop-up café and a yard sale in the yard. Music is provided by ErkKari with a surprise performer.

Locomotive stables

Höyryraide Ltd, the owner of the locomotive stables in Nurmes, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year by opening the doors of the locomotive stables to the public free of charge. The company’s 30-year history will be remembered in an exhibition entitled ”Souvenirs from the trackside”. There will also be an opportunity to see the equipment of the Steam railway.

The library and culture house of Nurmes, built in 1991 and renovated completely in 2019-2021.

The chapel and meeting house of evangelical lutheran church is built in 1915. Café, starting point of Guided tours of Vanha Kauppala.

Kirkkokatu wooden school

The wooden school building, known from it’s dashing window decorations, is built in 1905. Ticket sales, starting point of Puu-Nurmes children’s adventure tours.

Evangelical Lutheran church

The fifth church of Nurmes is built in 1893–1896. It presents late gothic style and has 2200 seats. From 10 am to 5 pm there is guided access to the tower. Group size 10-15 people at the time.

Orthodox church of Saints Peter and Paul in Nurmes

Lehtovaarankatu 3

Lehtovaarankatu is worth a visit, at least for renovators, as there may still be some minor surface work in progress. This 3-storey 1950s detached house is also looking for a new owner. In the courtyard, you have the opportunity to see two rabbits and two German shepherds through a small garden.

Over 40 years of gardening experience is reflected in the thoughtful planting and small kitchen garden. The aim has been to create a continuation of the city park on the other side of the fence. A pop-up café in the courtyard will be set up by the Nurmeksen Sepot junior hockey team.

Garden lovers should head to at least this destination. As well as a large garden to admire, there are perennial plants for sale and a green designer to talk to.

This house is built in 1958 and you can visit it partly. House is looking for tenants. There is also pop-up café.

The yard sale sells clothes and items from the cottage. There is possibly also old cars on display.

#7 (Eastern Kauppala):

Built in 1958 and owned by the same family since then, the house opens its doors and garden. The builder of the house was an interesting person who, among other things, had survived the bombing of the old hospital’s shelter in 1940. There is also a yard sale and snacks for sale.

Tuomaankatu 10

"Rönkön talo" (Rönkkö's house)

This house, built in 1924, is located in a gorgeous property by the lake Nurmesjärvi and is known as Rönkkö’s house, because it has been owned by the same family since the beginning of its history. This site has open garden.
